Sustainability of resilient South African nation brand depends on socially cohesive communities

first_imgJohannesburg, Thursday 18 August 2016 – In preparation of the inaugural Nation Brand Forum on Wednesday 24 August 2016, Brand South Africa hosted a research reference group yesterday that looked into the issue of social cohesion. The reference group looked at whether South Africa is asking the right questions when it comes to the analysis and measurement of social cohesion in South Africa. The reference group comes within the context of Brand South Africa’s mandate to promote social cohesion and nation building. International best practice indicates that a resilient nation brand is anchored on a socially cohesive citizenry.Social cohesion is, amongst others, premised on active citizenship, where community members and citizens work together for the attainment of shared goals, designed and agreed upon to improve the living conditions for all.Brand South Africa’s General Manager for Research, Dr Petrus de Kock said: “Unfortunately challenges of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and historical divisions around race, class and gender make it difficult to arrive at a socially cohesive and united society as fast as we would want to. Through such reference groups, we aim to map out ways on how to recreate these challenges in moving us towards an ideal socially cohesive society.”Dr de Kock made reference to the goals of the National Development Plan (NDP), and indicated how these articulate in one way or another ways for the nation to deal with the question of Social Cohesion. He added: “Transformation of the South African society, economy, identity, education, and interactions with our immediate region and the world, are all in one way or another aimed at human development, and greater social cohesion – and this is outlined in the NDP.“The process of building nation brands, including brand South Africa, requires a consistent and coordinated efforts, which is heavily reliant on nation building. Nation-building in the context of South Africa, calls for a rethinking, on what social cohesion, linked to nation building, should be. It is premised on these reasons that we are interrogating the concept of social cohesion. Inputs, suggestions and actions recommended by participants at today’s research reference group will inform planning for the Nation Brand Forum scheduled for 24 August 2016.Dr de Kock concluded: “The reputation of a country, nation, or nation brand is shaped by a multitude of factors. Importantly, a reputation is not a fixed once off outcome of an action, or set of actions. It is a continuous process that needs to be refined based on the challenges and opportunities presented for the nation.”Media are invited to participate in the inaugural Nation Brand Forum as follows:Date: Wednesday 24 August 2016Time: 08h30 – 15h00Venue: The Maslow Hotel46 Rivonia Rd, Sandton, 2146RSVPS/Enquiries: Tsabeng NthiteEmail [email protected] number 076 371 6810Brand South Africa will also be able to facilitate any requests for interviews.Follow the conversation on #SANationBrandlast_img read more

Behavioral Programs Help Reduce Energy Use

first_imgA recent report on the experience of four Minnesota electric co-ops suggests that utilities equipping their customers with smart meters plus software allowing them to gather detailed information about their energy use can see a reduction in the demand for electricity.According to a report in Midwest Energy News, four rural electric co-ops in Minnesota saw reductions in demand of between 1.8% and 2.8% over a period of one to three years when customers had access to data via a program called MyMeter.Separately, programs in Massachusetts, detailed in a June 2013 report, also showed energy savings when customers were alerted to how much electricity they use.Susan Mazur-Stommen, director of behavior and human dimensions research for the American Council for an Energy-Efficienct Economy, said the findings in Minnesota, verified by a third-party, were significant because they add to the scant information currently available on how well behavioral programs actually work.“The more data we have at a large scale, the more interested utilities are in using [behavioral strategies],” she told Midwest Energy News.Mazur-Stommen was the co-author of an ACEEE report on utility-run behavior programs. In all, the authors found 281 behavior-based programs, but said many of them are “still in the pilot stage.” MyMeter available in 15 statesJan Cook, vice president for client engagement with MyMeter, told GBA that the software is currently available in 15 states as well as several foreign countries. In all, 30 utilities have signed up, ranging from very small ones with as few as 1,400 customers to some of the biggest in the country. (Customers participated through their utility, not by signing up individually.)The software, which is embedded in a utility’s website, lets customers check on their energy use via a smartphone app or website. The software also allows consumers to get an alert when they’re using more electricity than expected, and permits homeowners to compare their energy use with those in similar houses, MyMeter says.More than half the states in the country now have some form of “rate decoupling” that separates utility earnings from the sale of electricity, Cook said, and utilities may be able to earn reimbursements by proving they are lowering the demand for electricity. In Minnesota’s case, the savings were verified by an independent evaluation firm, Illume Advising, and subsequently accepted by the Minnesota Department of Commerce so they could be counted toward state-mandated efficiency goals, Midwest Energy News said.Cook said other utilities using MyMeter software also are collecting data about reductions in demand, but because they need at least a couple of years worth of information for documentation Minnesota is the only state so far with results that can be published. She expected additional reports in another six months. More engaged customers save more electricityCustomers who showed more interest in logging in to the MyMeter website saved more energy than those who showed only marginal interest, Midwest Energy News said.Users who got alerts but didn’t log onto the site to get details reduced consumption by about 2.25%, but those who were “actively engaged” with the website for at least six months showed reductions of more than 4%, the report said. For customers who used the system for one or two years, energy savings were 2.27% among those who used it for three years, savings dropped to 1.88%.last_img read more

Workshops Set to Spur High-Performance Windows

first_imgThe North American Passive House Network (NAPHN) has announced three workshops in September aimed at helping manufacturers increase the development and production of climate-specific windows suitable for Passivhaus construction.Workshops will take place in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 22; in Toronto on September 28; and in Vancouver, British Columbia, on September 30.“These workshops are designed to provide support and assistance to a broad spectrum of manufacturers looking for ways to improve their current window performance or to design new profiles to meet the climate specific Passive House Component Certification criteria,” NAPHN said in a news release. The announcement follows the award of a nearly $900,000 grant in July by the Canadian government to Dynamic Windows and Doors. The money is to help the company produce a window that could be used in Passivhaus construction at its Abbotsford, British Columbia, plant. Dynamic would be the first to market a made-in-Canada wood Passivhaus window, according to the Canadian government.NAPHN said the grant represented “the first major North American government investment to develop high-performance components” needed for certification. Manufacturers will get information on how to design, make, and certify high-performance windows with various frame materials as the market for these products continues to expand.A “robust” European market offers more than 200 window products certified by Germany’s Passivhaus Institut (PHI), NAHPN says. But according to NAPHN co-presidents Bronwyn Barry and Ken Levenson, there is a single U.S. manufacturer of a window certified by PHI, Synergist Windows in California. The scarcity of North American producers forces builders to look overseas. In an email, Barry wrote that there are “very few” locally made windows that are insulated adequately for the most densely populated areas of North America. She cited one study which found less than 1% of windows produced in North America could achieve even the “cool temperature” U-factor requirements of PHI. Further, a “hygiene and comfort” requirement designed to eliminate cold spots on window surfaces is poorly understood, she said.(The Passive House Institute U.S., which is not connected to PHI, has its own window data certification program.)Registration information for the September workshops is available at this NAPHN website.last_img read more

HBO cuts ties with Russell Simmons amid second allegation

first_imgNEW YORK, N.Y. – HBO distanced itself from Russell Simmons and scrubbed his name from a stand-up comedy series he helped produce on the eve of its debut following a second sexual misconduct allegation.HBO said Thursday it will go ahead with Friday’s airing of “All Def Comedy” but will edit out any link to Simmons in the wake of allegations by screenwriter Jenny Lumet who claims that he had sex with her more than two decades ago despite her repeated demands that he stop.“Simmons will not appear in the new series and we will be removing his name from the show moving forward,” read a statement by HBO, which had previously been home to the Simmons’ pioneering “Def Comedy Jam.” ”We have no other projects with Russell Simmons.”HBO has previously proved willing to sever ties with starry names amid allegations of sexual misconduct. After Louis C.K. was accused of harassment, HBO removed the comedian from its “Night of Too Many Stars” special and took down his previous standup specials and series from its on-demand services. The latest allegations facing Simmons comes from Lumet, who co-wrote “The Mummy” in 2017 and “Rachel Getting Married” in 2008, wrote an essay for The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday in which she recalled Simmons sexually violating her in 1991, when she was 24.“I desperately wanted to keep the situation from escalating. I wanted you to feel that I was not going to be difficult. I wanted to stay as contained as I could,” wrote Lumet, the daughter of filmmaker Sidney Lumet.Simmons said in a statement released after the essay’s publication that Lumet’s memory of the night is “very different” from his, but it’s clear to him “that her feelings of fear and intimidation are real.” He apologized for being “thoughtless and insensitive” in some of his relationships. He said he would resign from his businesses because, “I don’t want to be a distraction.”Lumet wrote that she never told anyone about that night until last month after allegations lodged against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein unleashed a torrent of stories about sexual misbehaviour in multiple fields.Lumet said she went public after model Keri Claussen Khalighi said Simmons coerced her to perform a sex act and later penetrated her without her consent in his New York apartment in 1991.Simmons, 60, denied those allegations, saying everything that occurred between himself and Khalighi was completely consensual and with her “full participation.” He suggested that Khalighi’s accusation came from feeling shame.“I’m deeply saddened and truly shocked to learn of Keri’s assertions as to what happened over the course of that weekend,” Simmons said in the statement. He later wrote that he “never committed any acts of aggression or violence in my life” or would “never knowingly cause fear or harm to anyone.”Hollywood figures including Debra Messing and Ron Perlman praised Lumet for coming forward. Messing on Twitter thanks Lumet for “bravely sharing your harrowing experience” and Perlman said: “Every man or woman having trouble understanding the ripples of this abhorrent behaviour should read Ms. Lumet’s words.”Def Jam Recordings was founded in 1984 by Simmons and Rick Rubin, making stars of such hip-hop artists as LL Cool J, Slick Rick, The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. Its roster currently includes Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Frank Ocean, Alessia Cara, Jeremih, Jeezy, Iggy Azalea, Big Sean, Nas and 2 Chainz.Simmons’ empire includes the Argyleculture clothing line, Rush Communications, yoga studio Tantris, the energy drink Celsius and the film and television production company Def Pictures, along with several other philanthropic efforts like the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and the Diamond Empowerment Fund.He was married to TV personality and designer Kimora Lee Simmons from 1998-2009 and they had two daughters. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.Simmons is the latest figure in the entertainment world to have his career derailed by accusations of misconduct. The accused include Pixar and Disney Animation chief John Lasseter, actors Kevin Spacey and Jeffrey Tambor, writer-director James Toback and TV anchors Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose.last_img read more

Ethiopian Airlines plane crashes shortly after takeoff, all 157 on board killed

first_imgADDIS ABABA: An Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed shortly after takeoff from the capital Sunday morning killing all 157 thought to be on board, according to statements from the airline and the state broadcaster. There were no immediate details on what caused the crash of the Boeing 737-8 MAX plane, which was new and had been delivered to the airline in November. The state-owned Ethiopian Airlines, widely considered the best-managed airline in Africa, calls itself Africa’s largest carrier and has ambitions of becoming the gateway to the continent. The airline’s statement said 149 passengers and eight crew members were thought to be on the plane that crashed six minutes after departing Addis Ababa on its way to Kenya’s capital. The crash occurred around Bishoftu, or Debre Zeit, some 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of Addis Ababa, at 8:44 am. It was carrying passengers from more than 30 countries, the airline’s CEO told journalists. He said they included 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians, eight Italians, eight Chinese citizens, eight Americans, seven British citizens, seven French citizens, six Egyptians, five Dutch citizens, four Indians, four people from Slovakia, three Austrians, three Swedes, three Russians, two Moroccans, two Spaniards, two Poles and two Israelis. Belgium, Indonesia, Somalia, Norway, Serbia, Togo, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda and Yemen each had one citizen onboard. Four of those on board were listed as using United Nations passports and their nationalities were not immediately clear. Records show that the plane was new. The last deadly crash of an Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane was in 2010 when the plane crashed minutes after takeoff from Beirut killing all 90 people on board. Sunday’s crash comes as the country’s reformist prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, has vowed to open up the airline and other sectors to foreign investment in a major transformation of the state-centred economy.last_img read more
