Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen quits

first_imgKolkata, Jan 2 (PTI) Mohun Bagans last season I-League- winning coach Sanjoy Sen today stepped down, taking full responsibility of his sides shocking loss to a 10-man Chennai City FC at their home ground.Already under pressure after a hat-trick of draws, Sens worst fears came true today when Mohun Bagan suffered I-League seasons first loss at the hands of the unfancied southern outfit who were reduced to 10 men in the 34th minute.Chennai City took a sixth minute lead through Frenchman Jean-Michel Joachim before Ansumana Kromah levelled it 1-1 from a penalty after Pradeep Mohanraj handed the ball inside the box.Veniamin Shumeyko then headed home the winner in the 71st minute to script the first big upset of I-League this season.”I cant say about the team, but it is the end of the road for me. It is the right time to take responsibility on my shoulders and move away from the club,” Sen said at the post- match press conference.”This is the first home match I lost. I tried a lot, I do not have the mentality to continue after this loss and three home draws where we could not come back. I cant deny that,” Sen said at Mohun Bagan tent.Having kicked off their campaign in style, Mohun Bagan beat arch rivals East Bengal 1-0 in the Kolkata derby but their title aspirations have dwindled. They are now at fifth place in the league table with 10 points from seven matches.Terming this a personal decision, Sen said: “Nobody sacked me, this is a personal decision. I should not continue as the supporters also have emotions attached with the club and I just cannot keep on making the fans unhappy. Im not fit to continue.advertisement”Before I was sacked, I think I have taken the right decision. As Gerard Houllier said you are no coach unless you are sacked?,” he said. This was the second match in a row that Mohun Bagan played at their home venue, as I-League came to Kolkata Maidan for the first time in history. But the first resulted in a draw — against a 10-man Indian Arrows, the developmental side of AIFF — and the fans had put pressure, shouting go back Sanjoy Sen.”I had decided beforehand that I will step down if we lose today. I have taken the wise decision. Thank you everyone,” the 57-year-old signed off.Sen was appointed the chief coach for the Mariners in December 2014 after the club parted ways with technical director Subhas Bhowmick and was instrumental in their I- League triumph in the 2014-15.He had previously been in-charge of Kolkata clubs like Mohammedan Sporting and United Sports Club and enjoyed success mostly in Cup competitions. While United SC became runners-up in IFA Shield and Durand Cup under his tutelage, the Black and Whites won the Shield last season. Sen had also led Mohammedan to become the champions of the I-League second division a couple of seasons back. PTI TAP PDS PDSlast_img read more

Should Jets Stick With Mark Sanchez Over Tim Tebow

Changes might be coming for the New York Jets.Mark Sanchez losing his starting job won’t be among them.Rex Ryan again stood by his quarterback Monday despite Sanchez’s struggles in an ugly mistake-filled 30-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday that left the Jets coach searching for answers and fans chanting for Tim Tebow to take over.“I think Mark’s our guy,” Ryan said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. I’m confident in Mark.”There’s no question, though, that the Jets (3-5) need to figure things out, and quick. They have games at Seattle and St. Louis after their bye-week break, followed by a home game on Thanksgiving night against New England.Ryan originally planned to have the players report to the facility on Monday and Tuesday, but decided to give them the full week off to be with their families and prepare for Hurricane Sandy.“I want them to get away and when they come back, we have to be all in,” Ryan said during a conference call. “The only chance we have is if we are 100 percent all in. We have no wiggle room. We need to start playing a ton better.”Ryan will brainstorm with his coaches this week before they take a few days off, and he expects suggestions on how to fix “everything” from everyone on his staff.“Is it a little change? Is it a radical change?” Ryan said. “I’m up for anything.”While Tebow won’t be the solution as the full-time quarterback, Ryan acknowledged that he’ll explore how the versatile backup can be used more on offense after seeing minimal playing time during the season’s first half. Tebow has played in just 54 offensive plays, averaging less than seven per game.“I think we’ll take a hard look at how we’re using him, what we’re asking him to do,” Ryan said. “Are there other things we can do with him? I think you’re absolutely right. We will definitely look at that.” Read more:  WSJ read more

Hernandez insists that goal was no fluke

first_imgWest Ham’s Javier Hernandez has revealed that his stunning equaliser against Chelsea on Sunday was no fluke and is hopeful that his strong display will not have gone unnoticedThe Mexico international equalised for West Ham in their 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, after Cesar Azpilicueta had put last season’s Premier League winners in the lead during the first-half.Hernandez scored a stunning curling shot into the bottom corner of the net, just moments after coming on as a substitute for Edmilson Fernandes, to earn a much needed point for David Moyes’ side.“Marko made a good run and then a clever pass behind him, because I think it was like a ‘no-look’ pass and the ball came to me and thankfully I decided I would score and I did!” said Hernandez, according to the club website.“When I saw the ball coming, I know where I am and when I’m looking back to the ball to shoot it, I saw a blue shirt, Cahill I think, moving to my left, so I decided to shoot it at the near post. I also knew Courtois was on the other side, thinking I was going to shoot the long way, but I shot at the near post and thankfully the ball went in.”“After that, in the final ten or 15 minutes, we created two or three more chances, but unfortunately we didn’t take one. Chelsea also created some good chances, but Joe was the MVP with his unbelievable saves.”The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker is hoping that his strong display will convince Moyes of giving some much needed game time.Jose Mourinho is sold on Lampard succeeding at Chelsea Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho wanted to give his two cents on Frank Lampard’s odds as the new Chelsea FC manager, he thinks he will succeed. There really…“I’m looking to play 90 minutes every game. I want to give a headache to the manager so he has to decide, like all the squad. You can see Patrice Evra also came in and did a good job.” said the forward.“We have some players who are injured who are trying to come back and we have a very good squad and we all want to play more than 20 minutes, that’s for sure. We also know that everybody wants to give everything to help the team.”Hernandez, who has won the Premier League twice with United, is aiming to continue West Ham’s recent strong form in a bid to avoid relegation at the end of the season.“We are all happy because, after the good performance the team put in against Southampton at home [in winning 3-0], we wanted to show consistency and I think we did it.” said the 29 year-old.“We showed consistency in our concentration and Joe put in a great performance, as did the rest of us, and we got a very important point.“With this point, it’s going to be pretty good this week. We can work with confidence after getting three points at home and a good point at Stamford Bridge, knowing how difficult it is to go there, and now we have a very important match, another final, against Stoke. So, we’re going to fight to get another three points at home and that can take us out of the relegation battle completely.”last_img read more

We’ve competed very well in the last few months, got the results we wanted and kept a very good position in the table while being involved in the Champions League.“With all the things [that have been] against us we were fighting, and we are going to fight in the future to be in a very good position and try to win.“But, of course, the moment we have the whole squad available we are going to be stronger than before.“We will see, if we are able to arrive in the last few months in a good position, that is the moment to push and to achieve the things that we want.”Spurs will take a trip to Turf Moor on Saturday to take on Burnley in their next Premier League match.Victory this weekend will enable Pochettino’s men to close up to two points within City, who will be facing Chelsea in the Carabao Cup instead, in third-place.LONDON, ENGLAND – JANUARY 30: (EDITOR’S NOTE: Digital filters have been used) The corner flag is pictured prior to the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Watford FC at Wembley Stadium on January 30, 2019 in London, United Kingdom.
