Sisters in Spirit Vigil hold annual march

first_imgIt was an emotional evening at the Fort St. John Friendship Centre as the Sisters in Spirit Vigil held their annual march. The march was held to raise awareness of the issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women. The event was organized by Connie Greyeyes and marks the 3rd year the Vigil movement has been held in Fort St. John. The NWAC has identified 582 cases across Canada of missing or murdered Aboriginal women. There are no charges laid in 40% of these cases which Greyeyes deemed far too high. NKDA takes up project to produce manure from organic waste

first_imgKolkata: New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has taken up a pilot project to produce manure from organic waste.The solid waste composting plant was inaugurated by its chairman Debashis Sen on Thursday.The wet waste will be collected from the community market of New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA).This is a situ-solid waste composting plant for conversion of organic/biodegradable waste to compost. The capacity of the plant is 1 MT/day. Continuous feeding of waste shall be done for six days and on the seventh day, the compost will be taken out. 1 MT of waste produces 100 kg of compost. Basically, the moisture from the waste is removed and after shredding it into small pieces, the process of composting is fueled by micro-organisms at some controlled temperature.If successful, the project will be replicated in other markets in New Town. This will drastically reduce the carrying cost of organic waste to the trenching ground.This is a part of the green city project by HIDCO. Several steps have been taken by HIDCO to increase the green cover in New Town. The waste water has been recycled and the water is being used to water the roadside trees. In Bengal, the problem is acute as most of the civic bodies do not have land to expand the trenching ground.The Dhapa dumping ground was set up by the British and KMC needs more land to extend the dumping ground. But no additional land is available.To cope with the problem, KMC has installed compactors all over the city.
