La Salle rode what coach Sal Lopez calls the “Lancer Wall” of Lauren McAulay, Kasey Johnson and Erin Smith for its third shutout over the Knights and 19th of the season. It is the Lancers’ . They shared the Division V crown with Pasadena Poly in 2002. “Our main focus was not to give up and play major defense,” McAulay said. McAulay had a hand in the Lancers’ goal when she sent a pass to the front of the Bishop Montgomery net. Shevlin found herself with an open shot and put it over goalkeeper Karla Ricardi for her second goal of the season for the Del Rey League champions. “Lauren McAulay crossed it and I was there at the right time,” Shevlin said. “No one was there and we were just lucky.” Rather than go into a defensive shell following the goal, the Lancers, who had set the tone early with intense pressure, continued to aggressively attack the Bishop Montgomery zone and out-shot the Knights, 9-1. The Lancers out-shot the Knights (15-6-3), 23-5, overall. DOWNEY – There was no need for any introductions when La Salle High School’s girls soccer team played Bishop Montgomery in Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship match. These teams were quite familiar with one another, having met twice in Del Rey League this season. The Lancers, already owning two victories, did the unthinkable by beating a team three times in the same season. Senior midfielder Sarah Shevlin scored midway through the first half to lift La Salle to a 1-0 victory over at Downey High’s Allen Layne Stadium. “It was very tough because we had two close opportunities in the box and couldn’t convert,” Lopez said. “I was afraid that would come back to haunt us. But Lauren, Kasey and Erin were able to contain their press and get us out of danger.” Added Johnson, “We knew who to mark from playing them so many times and, this game, we worked extra hard.” The game was delayed for nearly 25 minutes when La Salle’s Sara Turcios suffered a knee injury with 30 minutes to play and was taken off the field on a stretcher. second CIF girls soccer title 25-2-2 [email protected] (626) 962-8811, Ext. 4456 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
